Backup your backup

So I've been using Phanfare for a long time, since 2006. I still use it to backup nearly every photo and video I shoot with the DSLR, point-and-shoot, GoPro, Flip whatever.

But in recent years, there's been no development on either their iPhone/iPad app or their very sad read-only Android app.

Meanwhile, my wife and I have both gotten Android and Apple phones with decent cameras. But alas, there's no automatic way to upload from these phones to Phanfare.

Google Plus offers unlimited Auto Backup (full-size on Android, 2048px on iOS), along with some great features like Auto Awesome and Auto Enhance.

Dropbox offers 2GB of free space (which can include automatically uploaded photos from your camera via its app, for which they will give you an additional 3GB). But yeah, that filled up quick. Especially with videos.

Box offers 10GB (and somehow I ended up with 50GB through some promotion), but unfortunately you can't upload anything bigger than 250MB, which is a problem with these darned HD videos today's modern phones now shoot. Also, their app doesn't support auto-upload, so I had to get CameraSync for iOS and I'm still investigating the best solution for Android.

But back in May, Flickr decided to offer 1TB of space for photos and videos. I hadn't thought much about it, but after seeing another article plugging Google Plus, I thought, why not take advantage of another place to get some free backup?

A small amount of searching led me to Flickr Uploader for Android, which as I speak is slowly but surely backing up 1276 photos and videos to my Flickr account. Woot, backups everywhere!

(CameraSync supports Flickr as well, so I'm backing up my iOS photos there as well.)

By the way, this only deals with Backup. Organization and searching of photos (alas only by Album name) is pretty good with Phanfare, but as one more backup, I've largely gone with the same solution as Danny Sullivan - local storage organized in folders, duplicated to newer bigger drives as I run out of space. The biggest problem of course is metadata.

I don't think any service has come up with the killer solution for this yet.
